Real Time Monitoring System for a Distillery: Scotland
Real Time Monitoring System for a Distillery: Scotland
In 2023 Flow-5 installed a real-time monitoring system for a distillery in Scotland. This monitoring system provides a continuous feed of flow rate and water level data from the site, which is stored, managed and viewed in real time on Flow-5’s cloud-based data management platform.
Flow-5 completed an assessment of the existing water supply system and an appraisal of future water supply options for this site in 2022/23 (case study here). This assessment highlighted the need to understand more about shallow groundwater flow and springs in the area and gave recommendations for these to be monitored. This monitoring data will provide a ‘baseline’ dataset from which typical seasonal changes to flows and levels can be understood and will allow the understanding of the groundwater system to be further refined.
Two 90o v-notch weirs were installed to measure spring flows, with the height of water above the weir measured and converted to flow rate. A sensor was also installed into one piezometer to measure groundwater level. The sensors send data wirelessly every 10 minutes (via LoRaWAN) to a local gateway where it is fed through to the cloud-based data platform.
The incoming data is stored, managed and viewed in real time on Flow-5’s cloud-based data management platform, which can be accessed remotely from anywhere (with login and internet connection). Bespoke dashboards were made for this project to allow data to be easily viewed and managed. The platform allows alarms to be set to specific trigger levels, with alerts sent via SMS and / or email when trigger levels are exceeded, or anomalous data is detected.
