BOREHOLE WATER SUPPLY MONITORING SYSTEM FOR AN INDUSTRIAL SITE: ENGLAND
Borehole water supply monitoring system for an industrial site
In 2023, Flow-5 were contracted by a large recycling company to install a monitoring system for a licenced borehole water supply at one of their operations in the north of England.
The client wanted a system to allow:
- Automatic logging of data for abstraction licence returns to the Environment Agency (flowmeter totals and water levels).
- Monitor the performance of the borehole supply in real time over the long term to ensure potential issues can be detected early and remediated without significant disruption to the supply or further damage to the system and wider environment.
The installation of this monitoring system followed on from Flow-5’s work at this site in 2023 to supervise the installation and testing of the borehole, and successfully obtain a new abstraction licence. More information on this previous work can be found in this case study
Outcomes:
In early 2024, Flow-5 installed a real time monitoring system for this borehole water supply. The system monitors water levels, flow totals, flow rates and electronic conductivity (EC) in real time.
This includes customised alarms that send SMS and email notifications when the defined limits are exceeded, or a breakdown is detected.
Incoming data is viewed, stored and downloaded from an online platform (and app) that hosts customised dashboards tailored to the client’s needs.
This platform automatically stores data required for abstraction licence returns in tables that can be easily exported ready for submission to regulatory bodies.
All data is stored indefinitely, meaning that the performance of the system can be retrospectively reviewed. Flow-5 will be using this data to complete Annual Borehole Performance Reviews for this asset on an ongoing basis. This review includes tracking of borehole pumping capacity through time to identify a loss of performance with time that could be addressed through borehole rehabilitation.
Example screenshots from the customised dashboards that are accessed through the online platform / app can be seen in the images shown here.
